I’m Osher Gunsberg and I’m a proud ambassador for The Shepherd Centre My experience with hearing loss started when I was about 17 when I started work as a roadie in nightclubs working with rock n roll bands and hearing protection wasn’t really a part of my workplace. I’ve lived with tinnitus since then; since the middle of Grade 12. For me, the biggest misconception about my hearing loss is that I’m ignoring you or I’m being rude. People have come up to me and go, ‘Oh yeah, you’re the guy from the thing… …Oh yeah, you were really rude to me once at a festival.’ It’s like, you might have called my name but I didn’t hear you. That’s why I didn’t turn around. I’m sorry. So for me, you know, that’s my experience. Ah, I can’t imagine what it would be like if I was 4 and trying to learn what the world is with that. I became involved with The Shepherd Centre because living with hearing loss, I’ve seen how much that impacts my relationship with my wife and my step-daughter. I can’t imagine what it would have been like if I was a little kid without a lifetime of social skills and social cues to base that communication on. So, to try and give a young child a better head start of trying to go into a life that is you know, fundamentally different from all the other people around them, I’m just grateful to be a part of it. The Shepherd Centre have five locations across NSW and the ACT Since they’ve been around they’ve helped over 2,000 children and their families who have a child born with hearing loss. And for me, the most remarkable outcome is that they can get these kids to a level where they can start mainstream school at the same age as their peers with speech and language skills at the same level as the other kids which is a world-leading outcome and that is something very special. You shouldn’t feel limited whatsoever. You can achieve exactly what every other kid your age can achieve; if not more. Because you have this amazing support; this incredible community of people that want to see you succeed and help you succeed in every, every course of your life.
